These works are a form of play, partly intuitive and partly logical, in which physical and pictorial structure overlap. Each piece moves the eye between the physical presence of its materials–paper, wood, ink and paint–and the materials’ pictorial characteristics–compositional structure, implications of perspective, or evocations of light. The works are about what happens when the eye jumps back and forth from seeing a line as a physical piece of material to seeing it as a graphic element. When that happens, what does the eye jump over?
